At Lake Neusidler’s lake in the village of Illmitz on the border with Hungary we find a world star on the sweet wine sky. Here Alois Kracher, the father of the current winemaker Gerhard, created a new style of sweet wines, which in their entirety are based on finesse and where acid and sweetness are always in balance. Alois Kracher was also one of the drivers of the great breakthrough for Austrian wines onto the world stage back in the 1990s. Unfortunately he passed away too early; meaning Gerhard had to assume responsibility for the Kracher wine production, which he did with great enthusiasm.
Winemaking and terroir
Eiswein is only produced in the years when ideal conditions prevail – meaning the weather allowing the grapes to remain on the branches well into the autumn whilst remaining healthy. The grapes freeze (hence the name Eiswein – Icewine) on the branches and upon harvest they’re quickly transported to the winery for the precious drops to be extracted. Gerhard Kracher then matures the wine on steel tanks to retain the purity of the fruit.
A unique wine with sweet tropical fruits as the clearest flavourprofile. What makes this wine special though is its high concentration paired with an equally high concentration of acidity. An irresistible wine!
