ABOUT THE PRODUCER :
Javier Arizcuren comes from a family of winemakers in Quel, i La Rioja Baja. He’s an architect by trade and among his projects you can find the vineyards Marqués de Terán and Finca Los Arandinos and, lately, the restoration of the historical caves and building complexes by the vinyards Conde de los Andes at Ollauri. He started making a small amount of iwne in the familys basement after finishing his studies in viticulture and oenology at the university at La Rioja in 2009. In 2011 he took over the family farm and started showing his potential in bringing forth the different character of the wines from Quel.
Of all vineyards that make up the familys heritage only the plots with the best potential are included in the Arizcuren-project. They are plots of varying age; 30 – 120 years old, mainly structured according to the “Gobelet-system” with optimum soil, altitude and orientational qualities for viticulture. The plots are worked organically, free of pesticides and artificial fertilizer. At the end of the cycle a harvest date is chosen, and this differs from year to year, depending on when the grapes reach their maximum balance of fruit, acid, polyphenol charge etc. The bunches become a type of map where you are able to read the climate-related ups and downs that have made them grow and mature. Grapes are carefully cnosen from the vineyard and then transported in plastic boxes to ensure maximal integrity prior to being placed in the tanks.
This is a Rioja with a strong expression. Subtle fruity aromas of dark plums and currants with an earthy undertone. Spicy notes of cacao and black pepper. Fresh and silky with a long after taste.
