For three generations the Kracher family has led the way in the Seewinkel, that corner of Austria to the east of Lake Neusiedl, just an hour’s drive from Vienna. It was Alois Kracher Senior, back in the 1950s and ‘60s who first realised the potential of the area for quality wine growing. Then in 1991, Alois Junior (Luis) set the world on fire with his ‘new’ style of dessert wine, focussing on finesse and balance more than just outright sweetness. Now his son Gerhard manages the impressive heritage of high class wines in the sweet style.
Wine production and terroir
This is a wine with 150-160 grams sugar per liter but with a high acidity that creates balance. The wine feels fresh and light despite the sweetness. The wine is matured for 12 months of which 2/3 on new oak and 1/3 on old oak.
The wine has intensive aromas of roses, rose water, citrus, strawberries and cherries. The flavours are complex, reflecting the same tones as the aromas together with sweet spices. The subtle tannins give the weine good structure that stays through the long aftertaste.
