Yves Cuilleron is one of the well renowned producers in northern Rhône. His Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu are widely known and award-winning. Yves makes several top wines from these origins and also terroir wines with grapes that grow outside the appellation boundary. Most of the vineyards are located in and around Chavanay right on the Rhône River, just south of the town of Condrieu. The vineyards stretch up to the Côte-Rôtie in the north to the village of Saint Péray in the south. A large majority of the vineyards are located on terraces, which means that all the work must be done by hand. Yves Cuilleron’s grandfather was the first to bottle wine for commercial purposes back in 1947. Antoine Cuilleron (uncle and manager before Yves) took control of the domaine in 1960. He significantly expanded the estate’s wine acreage and developed the business. Yves took over in 1987 and has since built a brand new facility and at the same time acquired additional vineyards.
The grapes are harvested by hand and then sorted, de-stemmed and pressed. The alcoholic fermentation takes place with natural yeast for two weeks in open tanks. The wine is finally stored in barriques for 8 months.
The wine has a concentrated aroma of blackberries, black currants, sun-ripened raspberries and herbs. The palette is fresh and offers cherries, freshly ground black pepper and licorice. The brisk acidity follows the wine through a long aftertaste.
