Jean-Marie Guffens-Heynen and his wife Maine produced their first wine in the Mâconnais village of Pierreclos 1980. After five years as a wine broker Guffens-Heynens started their own négociant house “Verget” in 1990. He scoured the length and breadth of Burgundy for the best grapes and signed up quality driven growers that he could trust. The grapes that are procured must be hand-picked and of the same quality that are used in their own wines. After harvest the grapes are taken to the winery where all wines are produced, stored and bottled. The focus is on the gentle treatment of the fruit and the young wines, fermentation on barrels as well as maturation on the lees. The result is distinctly fresh and fruity wines, rich in extract and clear origin.
Vinification & Terroir
The grapes come from the villages of Vire (50%), Charnay, La Roche Vineuse and Pierreclos. Vire and Charnay are on Mâcon’s classic calcareous soils that give the wine depth, while the calcareous soils in La Roche Vineuse and Pierreclos deliver freshness and elegance. All vineyards have soil with a high degree of stone. This wine, made from self-run must, is fermented and has since matured “sur lie” in horizontal stainless steel tanks.
Terroir: The area around La Roche Vineuse and Pierreclos in Mâcon (Burgundy) is rich in limestone.
Jean-Marie Guffens handles the grapes in a fantastic way, creating a fresh and elegant but at the same time complex and tasty wine. Generous aroma of orange, citrus, yellow apples and floral notes. The wine is flavorful with elegant citrus tones, minerality and some oak that lifts the yellow fruit.
